On Tuesday March 20th from 6-8 pm there will be a free “Season Extension Workshop” with C.J. Walke from the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association at the Belfast Free Library.
This is part two of a three-part series led by MOFGA’s Organic Orchardist, C.J. Walke on raising your own organic food. In this one-hour presentation, C.J. will discuss ways to extend the growing season in your home garden, including the use of cold frames, row covers and hoop enclosures. He will present different ways to get an early jump on the season by sheltering young seedlings, as well as extending the fall harvest by protecting crops from early frosts. There will plenty of time for discussion and questions.
The final workshop in the series will take place on April10th. The topic,
“Grow Your Own Organic Garden” is part of a state-wide program put on by
MOFGA. Are you concerned about the rising cost of food? Unsure what the term “certified organic” means? Interested in learning how to grow your own vegetables in a sustainable manner? Join us for an evening long workshop on how to grow your own garden. We’ll talk about the basics of soil science, how to enrich your soil to produce healthy, and high-yielding plants. The course will also cover the basics of making and using compost, the principles of crop rotation and how to incorporate green manures and manage nutrients in the garden. Other topics will include how to tell the difference between cultivated plants and weeds, basic weed control strategies and common insect pests and methods of natural insect control.
Both workshops are co-sponsored by the Belfast Co-op, the Belfast Free Library and MOFGA. For more information please call the library at 338-3884 ext 10.
