AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Military Funeral Honors Program hosted by the Maine State Police will conduct Funeral Honors Guard training for law enforcement officers Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 9-11, at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro, Maine.

The training will culminate in a skills demonstration and graduation ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11.

Frank Norwood, Maine Military Funeral Honors coordinator, said, “More than 50 law enforcement officers from around the country have signed up to attend — two from as far away as Kansas.”

In 2000 a federal law was passed that entitles all honorably discharged veterans to an appropriate military funeral, Norwood said. Since its creation in 2004, the Maine Military Funeral Honors Program and the Maine State Select Honor Guard have performed more than 8,700 military funerals and ceremonies through out Maine.
