Confused by ObamaCare? Could there be a better way?

Why are Canadians healthier and wealthier than US citizens? And what are the lessons for Maine? It is these questions that the producers of The Healthcare Movie, an award winning documentary about how the Canadian and US health systems developed so differently, will help answer.

The film will be presented by Maine AllCare on October 24th 7-9 PM at the Nickelodeon Cinemas, 1 Temple Street in Portland. Laurie Simons and Terry Sterrenberg, the creators of the film will be on hand to answer questions from the audience. Dr. Phil Caper of Maine AllCare will serve as facilitator.

Kiefer Sutherland, a British born Canadian actor with surprising ties to the Canadian health care system, narrates The Healthcare Movie. The film shows how it happened that Canada’s Medicare system, after a bumpy start in one province, expanded to include all provinces in a tax supported universal medical care plan. It also shows what happened in the United States that led to the current situation where health care is considered a commodity rather than a human right.

This event is most timely as the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) is being rolled out. We will learn about how we here in Maine can improve the ACA to have a truly universal, affordable and high quality health system – one that is fair to patients and providers alike and will make our state not only healthier, but more competitive.

Please join us on October 24th at the Nickelodeon in Portland for what promises to be an informative evening. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the showing at the theater (1 Temple St., Portland or online at patriotcinemas.com ). A portion of the proceeds will go to the Portland Community Free Clinic.
