ELLSWORTH, Maine — Junior Tournament Tennis returns to Ellsworth in June with the Boys and Girls 16 and 18 Chris Angell Summer Classic. Play begins on Friday, May 3, and continues into the weekend of June 1 and 2 in a single-elimination format.

The Ellsworth Tennis Center is host to this newly sanctioned event. Application for players may be made online through the USTA website. Entry fee is $30 payable online.

According to Susan Scherble, owner of the Ellsworth Center and a tennis mom: “Kids seeking top competition have had to travel long distances to tournaments in Portland, Lewiston or Boothbay. We have a large number of very good juniors in this Down East area who will benefit from the oportunity to compete at the highest level. Our Junior Development Program touches many of them and this tournament will test their skills on a broader stage, offer points toward state ranking and could gain recognition for college scholarship opportunities.”

The Ellsworth Tennis Center is home to several adult tennis teams that have won recognition in recent national competitions. Chris Angell was Maine’s No. 1 Men’s Open Tennis player and played out of the ETC. National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) is the co-host of the event.
