The Cosmopolitan Club Celebrates 100 year Anniversary

BATH – The Cosmopolitan Club of Bath, a local women’s club, celebrates its 100th Anniversary this April 11, 2013. Club President Michele Ober has been leading the members in the planning of several events including a Women Merchants Tea; a tribute to Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan Macy at Winter Street Center; a 100th Anniversary Open House and Tea; and a 60th anniversary Senior Tea.

Sagadahoc Preservation Inc.’s Dreamland Theater will sponsor the Keller/Macy tribute at the Winter Street Center on Wednesday, April 17, 6:30-9:30pm. The evening will include a reading from newspaper clippings documenting Keller and Macy’s visit to the Winter Street Congregational Church on April 17, 1913, the first event sponsored by the newly-formed Cosmopolitan Club women [600 people filled the church at 50 cents per ticket, Macy spoke for an hour about her relationship with Keller, and then Keller spoke for about 30 minutes]. Mr. James Phipps, Executive Director of The Iris Network in Portland, will be the guest speaker before the viewing of the 1962 “The Miracle Worker” with Anne Bancroft who portrays Anne Sullivan and Patty Duke as Helen. The suggested donation is $5.00 and a portion of the proceeds will go to The Iris Network (formally the Maine Institution for the Blind) and to the maintenance of the Cosmopolitan Club house. Beverages, popcorn, and baked goods are available for $1 each.
