Mid Coast Actors’ Studio, a newly formed community theater, will perform the masterpiece Hedda Gabler, written by Henrik Ibsen, May 25-June 2.

Jason Bannister, founder of MCAS and actor/director of Hedda Gabler, describes the production as “a classic Realist play from the late 19th century, with one of the greatest roles written for a woman in the history of theater.” Many critics compare Hedda to a female Hamlet. Gabler is one of the first fully developed neurotic female protagonists in literature. The masterpiece has been translated in many languages and performed throughout the world, on stage and screen.

Taking on the monumental role of Hedda is Marie Merrifield. Erik Perkins plays her husband, George Tesman. George’s aunt Julie is played by Christine West. Jay Rosenberg is Judge Brack, and Miss Elvsted is portrayed by Katie Glessner. Rounding out the cast is Jason Bannister as Eilert Lovborg and Amy Pillitteri as Berte. John and Elaine Bielenberg design the set and costumes, respectively. Betsey Feeley is props mistress. Perkins is the producer. Bannister directs the production.

Hedda Gabler May 25 & 26 at 7:00 p.m. and May 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the Troy Howard Middle School Theater in Belfast.
