EASTON, Maine — The first round of the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16,  at the Easton Junior-Senior High School gymnasium. The winner and runner-up will advance to the Aroostook County Spelling Bee to be held at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis. The purpose of the bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase vocabulary, learn concepts and develop correct English usage. The program is open to students who have neither turned 16 nor passed beyond the eighth grade, and who attend schools that officially enrolled with the program for the current academic year.
