BAR HARBOR, Maine — Create handmade Valentines straight from the sea at College of the Atlantic’s George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History’s annual Seaweed Valentine Workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2.

COA students have gathered seaweed that’s perfect for drying and shaping. As you remove the seaweed from its salty bath and arrange it into shapes for your sweetheart or friend, you’ll also learn how to identify some of the species that thrive in the ocean. Maybe you’ll choose sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca), or Irish moss (Chondrus crispus), or dulse (Palmaria palmate). As you shape the salty leaves into hearts, you’ll come to appreciate the special beauties of each species, and leave with a Valentine that’s a gift of the heart and the sea.

All ages are invited to the workshop, though children need to be accompanied by adults. There’s a suggested donation of $3.50 for adults and $1.50 for children. For more information, call the Dorr Museum at 288-5395.
