Penobscot Marine Museum Sponsors Dance as Part of “Summer Folk” Activities
A contra dance is scheduled on Saturday, June 16, at 7 p.m. in Union Hall, Searsport. Dances will be called by Chrissy Fowler, with music by the Belfast Bay Fiddlers.
The event is sponsored by Penobscot Marine Museum as part of its “Summer Folk” theme for 2012. Throughout the 2012 exhibit season, Penobscot Marine Museum is presenting exhibits and activities related to the history of tourism on Penobscot Bay. Derived from the English country dance tradition, contra dancing was adopted by New Englanders and became a popular pastime among summer visitors to the area.
All dances will be called, and beginners and singles are welcome. Admission is $8 for adults, with children under 12 free. Union Hall is the town hall building at 1 Union Street, Searsport.
Maine’s oldest maritime museum, Penobscot Marine Museum is home to outstanding collections of historic boats, photography, marine art and artifacts, ship models and 19th century furnishings and architecture. The admission center is at 40 E. Main St. (US Rte. 1) in Searsport. More information is at www.PenobscotMarineMuseum.org or call 207-548-2529.
