BAR HARBOR, ME—On Wednesday, September 25, College of the Atlantic is hosting a book launch for The College of the Atlantic Guide to the Lakes and Ponds of Mt. Desert at the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History at 4:30 pm. Come meet authors William V. P. Newlin, Kenneth S. Cline, Rachel Briggs, A. Addison Namnoum, and Brett Ciccotelli, and listen to a couple of readings from the book while perusing all the museum has to offer. The authors will also be available to sign books. Light refreshments will be served.
The guide is the very first volume under the imprint College of the Atlantic Press of Bar Harbor, Maine and is co-published with North Atlantic Books of Berkeley, California. Newlin, a COA life trustee, and Cline, an environmental policy faculty member at the college, co-taught a class to update Newlin’s guide to Mount Desert Island’s freshwater originally published in 1989. Co-authors of this revised and expanded second edition are two students and an alumnus.
The guide offers tips on which lakes are best for activities such as boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, and picnicking. Mt. Desert Island is blessed with more than 25 lakes and 40 streams, but most visitors to the island are attracted to its granite coast and rarely venture inland to explore. Containing beautiful photos and illustrations, detailed, full-color maps, and informative sidebars that fill the reader in on interesting bits of natural history and local lore, this is an essential resource for vacationers and local adventurers alike.
“The stars must have been aligned as work on the updated Lakes & Ponds of Mt. Desert was accomplished,” said Paul Haertel, former superintendent, Acadia National Park. “The right people contributed to this well-documented and beautifully illustrated text; the end product is a superb contribution to our understanding of this, our island home. For residents and visitors alike, this book has my highest recommendation.”
