You may have heard that a new circus school has come to town. Well, now is your chance to see what it’s all about and give it a try! Circus Atlantic, the recreational program of the Circus Conservatory of America, is opening its doors onSaturday, March 8 to the public for a Circus Arts Open House. Register for free @ www.circusatlantic.com
This event will give members of the general public a chance to experience some of the workshops and classes the recreational program offers. The Open House runs from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at Reiche Community School in Portland. The public is free to watch, everyone will be instructed in juggling, and a few lucky attendees will get the chance to get off the ground and up on the fabric. lyra, or trapeze. Reservations can be made online at www.circusatlantic.com.
Circus Atlantic has been offering circus classes in greater Portland since early last summer when Circus Arts Summer Camp began at North Yarmouth Academy. Last fall, classes were offered at Merriconeag Waldorf School in Freeport and at Reiche Community School in Portland. In January, classes also began at the Greater Portland YMCA.
Circus Atlantic students performed in last December’s “Circus in the Streets” event when the city shut down Congress Street from Longfellow to Monument Square. Plans are in the works for a similar public performance in the late spring.
“Circus Atlantic is the only place where I improve my skills and have a blast with everyone there,” says student James Depp of Yarmouth who began his classes at the summer camp and is focusing on aerial arts this winter.
Liz Trice, owner of Peloton Labs in Portland says, “What I love about the tumbling class is to see moves that seem so magical, and which I’ve never dared to to, broken down into simple parts that I can do! With the help of your expert and patient coaches I am amazed to see the impossible becoming possible, and am more more motivated to get in shape! ”
The Open House is free, but all children under the age of 18 must either have a parent present to sign a waiver, or download one from our web site and bring it with you already signed. These programs are open to all, but we do fill up to capacity and for safety reasons may have to limit the number of participants, so please register at www.circusatlantic.com in advance for the best chance to get in!
