BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor Dog Park is nearing completion and an opening ceremony is scheduled 11 .a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Dog Park site on Watchmaker Street, Essex Woods Park. The event will feature a ribbon cutting and acknowledgement of donors who made the park possible, as well as giveaways, refreshments and raffles. Dog Park merchandise will be available for purchase.
Park organizers said excitement has been building among the nearly 1,000 Facebook fans who have been following park progress and checking in at the site as fencing installation for the park nears completion.
Although use of City Park land at Essex Woods was approved by the City Council, no taxpayer funds will be used to build the park. The Friends of the Bangor Dog Park is an all-volunteer group of citizens who are working to raise awareness and support to pay for fencing, installation, site work, trash receptacles and other improvements.
In collaboration with Bangor Parks and Recreation, the Friends group is working to establish and maintain a dog park that provides a safe place for dogs to play and enjoy off-leash time with their owners and other dogs.
The Bangor Dog Park will be the only one to serve eastern Maine and the Bangor metropolitan area.
In Maine, off-leash, fenced dog parks currently exist in Portland, Bath, Kennebunk, Lewiston, Augusta and Belfast.
In addition to fundraising events, the Friends are seeking sponsorships from companies and individuals. Information is available at bangordogpark.org or on the Bangor Dog Park Facebook page.
