ELLSWORTH: Professional artist Philip Frey will lead an all-day plein air painting workshop at Woodlawn on Saturday, June 30, from 9 am to 4 pm.
Plein air painting comes from the French expression meaning ‘in the open air’ which describes the art of painting outdoors. Plein air painting was very popular among impressionists who liked to study the effect of light outdoors. The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paint tubes. During the same period, the French Box Easel, a highly portable easel with telescopic legs and built-in paint box and palette was invented, making plein air painting even more accessible.
Philip Frey’s plein air painting workshop will consist of painting outdoors in Woodlawn’s beautiful gardens, with a focus on composition, color palette choices, brush work as well as demonstrations and individual instruction by the artist. Participants can bring their choice of oil or acrylic. A supply list to bring will be provided upon registration. Participants should come prepared for the summer Maine weather and bring a bag lunch. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will be held in Woodlawn’s barns. The workshop, scheduled for Saturday, June 30, from 9 am to 4 pm, is designed for intermediate and advanced levels. The fee is $125 for Woodlawn members and $135 for non-members. As space is limited, pre-registration is required by calling 667-8671 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Born in Maine, Philip Frey graduated Cum Laude from Syracuse University with a BFA in painting. His work is currently shown at the Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth, Gleason Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor and Maine Art Gallery in Kennebunkport.
