We are so honored and excited to have Grammy-Winning superstar Angelique Kidjo come to the Strand this winter for a rare intimate performance!

There is simply no musician quite like Angélique Kidjo. One of the true stars of world music, she has spread her rhythmic Afro-fusion to the far reaches of the globe, cross-pollinating the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of R&B, Afro-funk, reggae, samba, salsa, gospel, jazz, Zairean rhumba, zouk, and makossa. Kidjo commands the stage with her fun-loving personality and electrifying charisma, has been deemed “Africa’s premier diva” by Time Magazine. The moniker speaks accurately to the singular career and life she has forged: Like Miriam Makeba was before her, Kidjo is the continent’s most internationally celebrated female musical exponent.

Known for her dynamic and uplifting music and live performances, Kidjo’s musical stlye draws inspiration from Afropop, Carribean, Zouk, Congolese rumba, jazz, gospel and Latin styles, well as from her childhood idols Bella Bellow, James Brown, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, and Miriam Makeba. Kidjo’s internationally acclaimed repertoire also includes collaborations with various recording artists such as Dave Matthews, Bono, Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, John Legend, Branford Marsalis, Joss Stone, and many more. Fluent in Fon, French, Yorùbáand English, Kidjo sings in all four languages; and often utilizes Benin’s traditional Zilinvocal technique and jazz vocalese.

This Grammy Award winning singer crosses musical boundaries and, in doing so, seeks to unite different world cultures through her music. As an activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Kidjo travels the world to inspire and empower, delivering countless speeches on the issues children and women face in her native land and elsewhere.

Don’t miss this dynamic international World-Music artist when she comes to the Strand for a very special show and her ONLY appearance in Maine!
