The Bucksport Garden Club has the distinct pleasure of welcoming Claire Ackroyd as their speaker at their May meeting, to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the Orland Methodist Church. Years of garden and landscape design experience make Ms. Ackroyd a well respected and sought after speaker – see her website:

Ms. Ackroyd offers the following insights into her life and career:

“I was raised in the best traditions of English gardening, in a large house with a large garden and a large family, many of whom would have put a career professional to shame with their knowledge of plants and their devotion to growing them!

I earned degrees in Plant & Soil Science and Horticulture from Universities in England and America. For many years, I owned and operated a landscape design and construction business in Maine, with a nursery that specialized in quality and unusual woody plant material. Since then I have taught horticulture and landscaping at both high school and university, as well as in numerous continuing education programs.

I am also a Certified Independent Organic Farm Inspector, and I inspect farms for organic certification. I am committed to finding ways to work with nature in all the landscaping that I do.”

Guests from our area would be welcome – you need only contact garden club members Shirley Pierce, 469-7842 or Carol Green, 567-3092 to make arrangements to attend.

Upcoming events for the Garden Club this year are their annual Plant, Bake and Book Sale, to be held in the lot next door to Rosen’s Store on June 1st – where you will find the usual excellent assortment of annuals and locally grown perennials for sale, along with beautiful donated arrangements from area growers, lots of great books for great prices, and of course, a delectable assortment of baked goods.

Your Bucksport Garden Club continues to partner with the Town of Bucksport and area businesses in civic beautification projects, planting those Main Street planters bursting with summer color and more, and their members are an outstanding resource for information – and gardeners are always willing to share. All proceeds of garden club activities go toward these community activities as well as scholarships for local children to further their educational experiences in the fields of gardening and landscape design.

Annual membership dues in the Garden Club are $10.00, and new members are always welcome! Meetings are the second Wednesday of the month from April to October, except for the month of August, and every season brings many interesting field trips, garden tours and more – a wonderful way to get acquainted with your neighbors and enjoy entertaining and educational programs – and there’s always good food! Contact Ms. Pierce or Ms. Green as noted above.
