The Acadia Choral Society will present its first-ever summer gala performance at Gates Auditorium (College of the Atlantic), on Saturday, June 16 at 7:00 p.m. This fundraising event will feature a wide variety of vocal and instrumental music performed by chorus members and friends. Music Director Jamie Hagedorn and Assistant Director Julia Morris-Myers will provide piano accompaniment.

Admission is by donation at the door, and refreshments will be provided. The proceeds will enable the Acadia Choral Society to hire instrumentalists to accompany their concerts in the 2012-2013 season.

The chorus will perform some of their favorite selections by Aaron Copland, Randall Stroope, and Greg Gilpin, as well as Mozart’s ethereal “Ave verum corpus.” Chorus members will sing selections from popular operas—including Carmen and Die Fledermaus—and Broadway shows. Other sets on this wide-ranging program feature a folk trio, sea chanties (with audience participation), traditional Balkan songs, and a variety of solos and duets from the Baroque and contemporary repertoire. Members of the Schoodic Summer Chorus will perform under the leadership of Anna Dembska. Other featured musicians include cellist Bill Myers and violinist Surrie Jayde Adams.

Director Jamie Hagedorn said, “The Gala is an opportunity for our chorus members to have some fun with repertoire that’s a little different from what we usually perform. Most of the music was chosen by our members. We’re also looking forward to sharing our music with visitors and part-time residents who might not be in town for our more formal concerts in December and May.”

The Acadia Choral Society wishes to acknowledge the Maine Community Foundation and their corporate sponsor, Central Distributors, Inc., for their support of this event.
