ELLSWORTH, Maine — Inspired by the theme of a Victorian Christmas, a team of decorators has transformed Woodlawn’s interiors into a visual sensation of the Victorian era’s holiday style and tastes.
Victorian Christmas at Woodlawn will open Saturday, Dec. 1, when the public may view the decorations and take the Christmas tour. The tours will take place every day 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 23. Admission is $5, $1 children ages 5 to 12, free to children under 5.
The annual Woodlawn Holiday Open House will be held 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. See the beautifully decorated rooms, mingle with friends, try traditional wassail, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and take a candlelight carriage ride around the estate. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. The cost of the Holiday Open House reception is $22 Woodlawn members, $25 others. Proceeds will benefit Woodlawn. The evening will conclude with a reading of Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. by performers from Ten Bucks Theatre in Woodlawn’s Sleigh Barn. A $5 donation to benefit the theater troupe will be accepted.
Woodlawn’s Holiday High Teas will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 12 and 19, and Friday, Dec. 14. Reservations are required by calling Woodlawn at 207-667-8671. The cost is $25, $22 Woodlawn members.
Margaret Ames will lead Froebel Star demonstrations at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday Dec. 8 and 22; and 12:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. A Froebel star is a Christmas decoration made of paper, common in Germany. The three-dimensional star is assembled from four identical paper strips, then dipped into hot wax and sprinkled with glitter after being folded. The free workshop is open to those 10 years and older. Donations are appreciated.
Woodlawn will offer two traditional Christmas Feasts on Thursday, Dec. 13 and 20. Guests will be driven to the front door in a horse drawn carriage. A traditional English Christmas dinner featuring roast goose will be served after a reception and tour of the house. Participants may bring their own wine. The feasts are limited to 20 guests. The cost is $80 per person.
The Woodlawn Store is open daily 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 1-23, or by special appointment.
