The Great Falls Balloon Festival is celebrating 20 years of flight August 17-19, 2012! Make plans to visit the Lewiston/Auburn, Maine area and be a part of this unique event.
From Simard-Payne Memorial Park (formerly Railroad Park), you can enjoy the site of dozens of hot air balloons as they take to the skies over the Androscoggin River. This year, we are happy to welcome back Arky, the very first special balloon that visited the festival! Along with Arky, the Purple People Eater, Stinky the Skunk and Gus T. Guppy and dozens of other balloons will delight crowds throughout the weekend.
It doesn’t have to be just a spectator sport either — arrange in advance to take a flight yourself! Balloon launches are scheduled for 6 am and 6 pm daily, Friday – Sunday, weather permitting.
When the balloons aren’t overhead, there is still plenty to do: dozens of food booths offer everything from hot dogs to lime rickeys, including breakfast for those early morning launches, all run by volunteers from local nonprofit groups. Along the walkway, craft and trade booths invite browsing, and a children’s area entertains everyone from toddlers to tweens. Live music can be enjoyed throughout the day at venues in both Lewiston and Auburn. A carnival, parade, and various demonstrations and contests round out the weekend events.
