Kids Have FUN learning & practicing wilderness skills at CCLC’s Outdoor Adventure Club!
The club meets every Saturday during the school year at the Cobscook Community Learning Center. Kids get a weekly outdoor experience that brings together learning, fresh air and exercise, camaraderie and fun – on the CCLC’s fifty-acre campus and local trails, in every kind of weather.
Club members will learn outdoor skills:
Map and compass reading, GPS & Geocaching
Lost Person Scenario
Building a survival kit, packing a backpack
Leave No Trace principles and practices
Winter wilderness survival
Water and boater safety
Snowshoeing & cross-country skiing
Canoeing & kayaking
Overnight adventures and hikes throughout Maine
Bobbi-Jo Bourdeau of Washington County graduated in 2012 from the University of Maine at Machias with a BS in Outdoor Recreational Management and a minor in Psychology. She was the assistant director of MWR for the United States Navy, established local youth leadership groups as an AmeriCorps volunteer, and has worked in many local schools and with many local non-profit organizations. She and her son live in Jacksonville Maine and together enjoy being outside as much as possible. You can usually find them in a tent, on a bike, in a boat, up a mountain, or around a campfire. Bobbi-Jo will lead ages 8 through 12.
Nicole Bennett is a junior in the Outdoor Recreation program at UMaine Machias. Nicole lives on Mount Desert Island in the summer, where she also works at the Mount Desert Campground. Nicole has been backpacking in Patagonia and has assisted with youth soccer teams.
Time: 10 am – 2 pm
Ages: Clubs are open to youth aged 8 to 12 of all skill levels. No previous experience in the outdoor/wilderness environment is required.
Class size: 6+
Class fee: $10 per class; Transportation may be available from Machias, check back for more info.
Materials fee: tbd as needed for expeditions
Special instructions: bring lunch & snacks! (Parents and students will receive a packet including a list of required items for club adventures.)
