BANGOR, Maine — The 20 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Penobscot County will get underway at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Lancaster room at Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway, 500 Main St. The rally will launch the event’s fundraising efforts for the year. It will feature event information, games and will honor cancer survivors and caregivers. There will be an opportunity to register a team for the overnight event to be held on May 17-18 at the University of Maine track.

Relay For Life of Penobscot County in 2012 raised more than $204,000 for local programs of cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services, including transportation for cancer patients and one-on-one support for women with breast cancer. The event included 85 teams who walked the track for 18 hours. Out of the 230 Relays in New England, Relay For Life of Penobscot County placed 18th in funds raised. In 2013, the Relay For Life planning committee has set a goal to host more than 100 teams and raise at least $205,000.
