It is against the law for family members or intimate partners to injure or threaten one another or force sexual contact. But the law has not stemmed the overwhelming emergency of domestic and sexual violence in Maine. There are at least 30,000 victims of domestic violence and 13,000 victims of rape or unwanted sexual activity in the state each year.

Shed Light on Violence is a Bangor Daily News initiative to inform readers about the human and economic toll of domestic and sexual violence, provide resources and research, highlight policy progress and share the stories of individuals working to end the cycle of violence.
