BAR HARBOR, ME – Arthur Martinez, leader in the world of business and former CEO of Sears, will discuss his book, The Hard Road to the Softer Side: Lessons from the Transformation of Sears, at College of the Atlantic on Tuesday, August 13th at 9 a.m. in the Thomas s. Gates, Jr. Community Center.
Martinez was chairman and CEO of Sears, Roebuck and Company from 1995 to 2000 and chairman and CEO of its retail arm, Sears Merchandise Group, from 1992 to 1995. Prior to Sears, he was vice chairman at Saks Fifth Avenue, where he worked in various senior positions for 12 years. Martinez has also been involved with the large Dutch bank ABN Amro, where he was chairman after the financial crisis, and at AIG, where he has been a very influential director.
Martinez and COA Board Chair Will Thorndike, founder of Housatonic Partners, will discuss the critical role of corporate culture in balancing the experiences that shape the interactions between shareholders, employees, and customers.
“Arthur has a unique background having been involved in key, influential roles in three extremely high visibility and troubled situations,” said Thorndike, who is a graduate of Harvard College and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. “He has much to share on these experiences and their lessons and I’m looking forward to what should be a lively session.”
