Women’s Studies Class Visits the State House

Posted May 03, 2012, at 2:03 p.m.

Belfast, Maine. In March, Intro to Women’s Studies, let by adjunct U Maine Women’s Studies faculty member Nicolle Littrell visited the State House in Augusta as part of their “Women and Politics” unit. They were hosted by Representative Erin Herbig, who acknowledged the class with a warm welcome in House Chambers by the Speaker of the House. In between her busy voting roster, Erin met with the students to discuss her experience as a woman working in the political domain. She spoke about several important bills and resolutions she has co-sponsored focused on women. Several of her colleagues, Rep. Megan Rochelo and Rep. Elisie Flemmings, also joined the discussion, which was lively and interesting. The students asked great questions!

For most of the students, this was their first visit to the State House. They seemed to really appreciate the experience of a “mobile classroom” and the opportunity to look at and apply key course concepts around gender and women’s experiences to the “real life” world of State politics. Thanks again to Rep. Erin Herbig for an exciting and enriching experience–and also to the staff at the Hutchinson Center for helping to facilitate this excursion.
