PORTLAND, Maine –The Maine Women’s Fund, the only Maine foundation focused exclusively on advancing women’s and girl’s economic security, is pleased to announce the appointment of its CEO, Sarah Ruef-Lindquist, resident of Camden, to the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women.
The Commission is a government-appointed group dedicated to improving opportunities for women and girls in Maine by advising the Governor and members of the Legislature about policy and social issues affecting women and girls in Maine. Additionally, the group carries out research and presents a biennial Report on the Status of Women and Girls in Maine.
The commission consists of 17 members, including seven appointed by the Governor, five appointed by the President of the Senate and five appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The seven appointees by the Governor each represent one of the following interests: minorities, the elderly, low-income people, persons with disabilities, youth, working with victims of domestic violence and federally recognized tribes. Each member is required to have understanding of problems facing women in Maine, who have experience in advocacy relating to women’s issues, and who provide leadership in programs or activities that improve opportunities for women.
“I am very pleased to be appointed to serve Maine women and girls in this capacity,” said Ruef-Lindquist. “The Fund endeavors to understand as much as it can about the challenges that women and girls face to economic security across the state, and the means of addressing poverty issues to ensure economic security. I will bring that understanding to bear on my work at the Commission, and on the Report committee on which I have agreed to serve.”
