William Cohen visits his namesake school in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine — Former Secretary of State and Sen. William S. Cohen spoke to two groups of students Monday at William S. Cohen Middle School.

Cohen told the audiences totaling approximately 600 students about his life on East Summer St. as a child, and when he attended the Old Garland Street Junior High School.

He also talked about playing basketball and baseball and being inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

Cohen was a congressman from 1973 to 1979, and a U.S. senator from 1979 to 1997, when he was tapped by President Bill Clinton to become secretary of defense. Cohen is a published author, and had launched the William S. Cohen Center for International Policy and Commerce at the University of Maine.
