The National Boatbuilding Challenge will once again be held this year in Belfast as part of the Belfast Harbor Fest, Aug. 17-19.
This is the 5th year Belfast has hosted the Challenge in which teams of two have four hours to build a 12-foot wooden skiff. They then have to show confidence in their construction ability as they get into the water and compete in a relay race in Belfast Bay.
If you think you are the fastest carpenter in Maine, Belfast is the place to prove it. Boats are judged based on time to finish, quality of construction, and speed in the water.
Spectators are welcome to watch the competition and to cheer on their favorite carpenters. Last year’s competition was won by two administrators at Waldo County General Hospital, Dr. Kent Clark, the Director of Medical Affairs, and Rob Fowler, RN, the Director of Quality.
If you would like more information, visit our website www.BelfastHarborFest.com or call David Crabiel 322-5805. There is a $150 charge for the boat materials but there are also opportunities for sponsorships.
The Belfast Harbor Fest begins Friday night at 6 p.m. with a launch party put on by Marshall Wharf Brewery with live music and refreshments for purchase. A Severe Joy will play at 7 p.m. followed by the Toughcats around 9 p.m. There is a $10 cover charge for the launch party
Saturday, there will be a 5K road race, a blueberry pancake breakfast, the National Boatbuilding Challenge, a Classic Small Boat Show, children’s activities, including a climbing wall, Come Boating’s 12th Annual Regatta, exhibits and vendors, and live music. There is a $4 charge for the breakfast but otherwise admission on Saturday is free.
On Sunday, a cardboard canoe race is planned for 10 p.m. and Habitat of Humanity of Waldo County will hold a Habitat Lobster Gala fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. Tickets for lobster (or steak), clams, corn on the cob, chips and homemade pies are $25 each.
