BAR HARBOR — Discover the offbeat, fun and wacky in Maine during a slideshow with Marisue and John Pickering at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at Jesup Memorial Library, in the latest Talks & Walks.
The Pickerings, residents of Orono, are the creators of “Maine – Beyond the Usual,” a unique travel guide that combines Marisue’s essays and John’s photographs to explore 50 curious places in Maine. Sherman’s Books, a co-sponsor of this event – will provide copies of the book, and a book signing will follow the slideshow.
Talks & Walks is a joint program of the MDI YMCA and the Jesup Memorial Library that combines an interesting program – the “talks” – with a free day pass to use all the great facilities at the Y just down the street – “the walks.”
Talks & Walks is free and open to everyone.
The Pickerings are making their first appearance in Bar Harbor at the Jesup. Their decades-long experiences as educators and their shared interest in exploring Maine’s history, cultural heritage and natural wonders were the genesis for “Maine – Beyond the Usual.”
Marisue is a University of Maine professor emerita. Her travel essays have appeared in Echoes, The Maine Scholar, Northern New England Review, Route 66 Magazine, Episcopal Life, and International Travel News.
John’s professional career included teaching at the elementary and university levels, including at the University of Maine’s College of Education and Human Development. His photos have appeared in International Travel News, institutional newsletters, and other media.
