UNLEASH THE POWER OF AGE! FRIENDS IN ACTION TO OFFER SPECIAL PROGRAMS TO CELEBRATE OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

Posted April 25, 2013, at 1:25 p.m.

Every year since 1963, May has been the month to appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of older adults and their contributions and achievements. It is a proud tradition that shows our nation’s commitment to honor the value that elders continue to contribute to our communities.

This year’s Older Americans Month theme—“Unleash the Power of Age!”—emphasizes the important role of older adults. This May, communities across the nation will recognize older Americans as productive, active, and influential members of society.

Friends in Action will be hosting a variety of special programs during May to celebrate Older American Month, in addition to the many programs and resources already available through FIA at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth, on State Street. The mission of Friends in Action is to assist older adults in staying independent. The Friends in Action Senior Center is becoming an important resource to seniors and their families in the area.

Throughout May, Friends in Action will host a number of free information sessions for seniors. “Eat Smart, Get Strong” is a nutrition and activity education series that will be held on Mondays at 10:00, starting on May 13. Participants can attend all four sessions or come to any one program. Legal Services for the Elderly will be at the Center on May 14 at 10:00 to give information about their services and explain about setting up power of attorney. On May 16 at 10:00, a pharmacist from Walgreens will be at the Center to answer questions about drug interaction and Medicare Part D. The Iris Network (a resource for the visually impaired) will be at the Center on May 21 at 10:00 to resent resources and answer questions. For more information on all programs at the Friends in Action Senior Center and a full schedule visit the website (www.friendsinactionellsworth.org) or call 664-6016.
