UNION AT THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN, JULY 21, 1861

Union Historical Society holds its first meeting of 2014 at the Robbins House on Union Common, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 5. Thomaston author and Civil War buff Blaikie Hines will make an illustrated presentation about the volunteers from Union and all of the other towns of Knox County who were there when the first great land battle of the Civil War was fought on July 21, 1861 at Manassas, Virginia, 30 miles west of Washington, DC. Hines will discuss the Knox County soldiers who took part in the conflict and tell what happened to them. Hines’ material is drawn from his latest book, The Battle of First Bull Run – Manassas Campaign July 16-22, 1861. Copies of this illustrated atlas and battlefield guide book will be available for purchase and author signing at the meeting. To enhance his presentation, Hines will wear the uniform of the 2nd. Maine Cavalry

Born in Connecticut in 1949, Blaikie Hines is a well-known fine arts conservator who specializes in 19th century paintings and frames. He is also a Civil War collector, historian, and author. Blaikie grew up in a family steeped in the history of the American Civil War. His great-great-grandfather from Massachusetts fought in The First Battle of Bull Run. Hines’ first book was Civil War Volunteer Sons of Connecticut. He makes his home in Thomaston, Maine with his wife, Judith.

After the meeting refreshments will be served by hosts Betty Nims and Alison Metcalfe. All meetings of Union Historical Society are free and open to the public. Union Historical Society owns and maintains the Robbins House on Union Common, the Cobb’s Ledge historic site on Town House Road, and the Old Town House, also located on Town House Road and available to rent for functions.
