BUCKSPORT, Maine — A group of seven University of Maine Nursing students are hosting a literacy awareness event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, in the gymnasium of the Jewett School. This event will be geared toward Bucksport area children ages 3-6 years, and their parents. The event will consist of an informational open house for parents to gain awareness of the importance of early childhood literacy, along with story time and literacy-based activities for the children. Each child who participates will receive a coupon from Book Stacks in Bucksport for a free Early Reader book. Light refreshments will be provided.
As a result of this event, the nursing students hope to increase parents’ awareness of the positive effects of reading, as well as inspire the children in the area to enjoy reading. A more long-term goal would be to see increased literacy rates of the children entering Kindergarten in Bucksport.
We strongly urge Bucksport parents, and anyone else who may be interested, to come and take advantage of this time to come learn about the positive effects of reading, while your kids participate in the fun activities we have to offer.
