UMaine BearFest to benefit sick and injured children

BANGOR, Maine — More than 600 University of Maine students will dance all night this weekend! All that boogieing is to support EMHS Foundation Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for kids right here in our area.

The second annual BEARFEST, is a student-led, student-planned, and student-run chem-free dance marathon. It starts at 5 p.m. Feb. 23, at the UMaine Field House (on the Orono campus). The dancing won’t stop until 5 am! All funds raised during BEARFEST will benefit pediatric healthcare at EMHS member hospitals across central, eastern, and northern Maine. So far, the dancers have raised more than $35,000! Why are these UMaine students so committed to the kids? Geena Lucas, BEARFEST co-chair, says, “We stand for the kids who can’t.”

Bearfest is a 12-hour action-packed event! Patrick Hart, BearFest co-chair says there will be free pizza from the Orono House of Pizza, Tim Horton’s coffee, popcorn, Subway sandwich platters, nachos, sno-cones, coffee, soda… and the list goes on! There will be everything from laser tag and bounce houses to bungee games and a glow stick rave. Hart and Lucas are both quick to point out that all the fun serves a higher purpose – raising money that will directly benefit local children and their families with the purchase of specialized medical equipment, and some much needed means of entrainment that will help lift a hospitalized child’s stay. “Lives are saved with the money we raise,” adds Hart.”
