Trekkers Thanks the Community for Support

To the Editor:

On behalf of Trekkers, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our supporters, sponsors and guests for making “An Evening of Poetry with Richard Blanco” such a wonderful event for our organization and for the community. On July 17th, Trekkers was pleased to host a fundraiser at the Strand Theatre featuring Inaugural Poet Richard Blanco. The evening began with a pre-event reception at the Island Institute where our guests were able to meet Mr. Blanco before the reading began. Adding to the overall presentation, local youth presented their poetry following Mr. Blanco’s reading. Through a combination of ticket sales and sponsorships, the event raised money to help support the youth-mentoring programs of Trekkers.

Of course, the success of this event was made possible by many people from our community. I would like to thank the Island Institute for hosting the reception, the Strand Theatre for hosting the poetry reading, and the following members of the business community and other organizations for their support: Allen Insurance and Financial, Archer’s/Brass Compass Café, Archipelago, Berry Manor Inn, Café Miranda, Crandall, Hansom & Collins, hello hello books, Jackson Memorial Library, Out! As I Want to Be, Owl & Turtle Bookshop, and SummerMaine.

In addition to thanking Mr. Blanco for sharing his gift of words and insight with our community, and to the student poets for sharing their work with us (Victoria George, Raegan Goulet, Alec Merrifield, and Megan Rickard), my sincere thanks go to the following individuals who helped make the event and its planning go so smoothly: John Bragg, Jenni Brooks, Jack Carpenter, Nancy Carter, Jean Faustini, Sam Hastings-Black, Jan Letourneau, Meredith Lynt, Ken Oelberger, Ali Young, Bethany Yovino, and the following Trekkers’ students/alumni: Amy Choudhari, Emilee Cross, Susy Fox, Luke Rector, Karis Sawyer, Bethany Schulberg, Alex Wallace, and Kendra Young. And, of course, many thanks to everyone who attended this enjoyable evening and supported Trekkers through this event.

As Trekkers begins another year of expanding its mentoring opportunities for youth from the midcoast area, we are so grateful for the support we receive from our community. It is through this support that Trekkers is able to achieve its mission of connecting young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. Thank you for your continued support of Trekkers and the young people we serve.

Sincerely,

Don Carpenter, Executive Director
