Trekkers is kicking off its 20th anniversary celebration by hosting a Gallery Opening at the Maine Lighthouse Museum on Tuesday, July 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event is open to the public and admission is free. Featured at the opening will be 50 one-of-a-kind pieces of buoy art that were created specifically for Trekkers’ first ever B.U.O.Y. Auction. Fifty artists with ties to Maine created the artwork to honor Trekkers’ 20 years of Building Up Our Youth through outdoor-based mentoring programs.
Each of the artists began with a traditional wooden lobster buoy. Through the use of collage, fabric, paint, ink, metal, wood, rope and other media, the artists expressed their individual styles and personalized their buoy for this project. The Gallery Opening will honor the artists and showcase their work. All of the artists’ buoys will be on display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum until July 21. From July 1 to July 21, 40 of these priceless pieces of buoy art will be featured in an online auction at www.BiddingForGood.com/Trekkers.
The remaining 10 buoys will be featured in a live auction as part of Trekkers’ 20th Anniversary Event on July 16th at the Strand Theatre starting at 7 p.m. Kaja Veilleux of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will be the auctioneer. The evening of July 16th will also include a reception at the Maine Lighthouse Museum from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to welcome Paul Theroux. Theroux will be Trekkers’ featured guest speaker at the Strand Theatre later that evening. Tickets for the pre-event reception and the main event are currently on sale at the Trekkers office, hello hello books, The Reading Corner and The Owl & Turtle Book Store.
The lead sponsor for Trekkers’ 20th Anniversary Celebration is SummerMaine Classic Vacation Rentals. Supporting sponsors are Crandall, Hanscom & Collins, P.A. and State of Maine Cheese.
