ST. ALBANS, Maine — The Town of St. Albans, in conjunction with the Maine Old Cemetery Association  (MOCA), will hold a workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at a St. Albans’ cemetery.

Participants will learn how to correctly clean gravestones and how to straighten leaning tablet stones.  More information is available from the St. Albans’ Town Office, 7 Water St., phone (207) 938-4568. The town office is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday; and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday.

Those planning to attend MUST pre register, with the St. Albans’ Town Office. It will NOT be possible to register on site. There are a limited number of spaces available.

Gravestones can be irreparably harmed when people, with the best of intentions, try to clean them in an unsuitable manner. Maine’s cemeteries are a valuable historical resource and the gravestones that mark the burial places of our ancestors or of the unknown members of a previous time, deserve the respect we can offer by keeping the markers of their final resting places in good condition, according to MOCA.

Additional information about MOCA is available at the MOCA web site http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~memoca/moca/htm
