WEST GARDINER, Maine — The town’s first woman fire chief was sworn in on Feb. 21. Fire Chief Vicki Dill will serve the 2013-2014 term.
Dill is the third woman fire chief in the state and the only woman firefighter in West Gardiner. She has served with the West Gardiner Fire Department for 17 years, spending many of those as the Fire Department’s training officer and captain.
A lifelong resident of West Gardiner, with deep family ties to both the Town of West Gardiner and firefighting, Fire Chief Dill has been a dedicated liaison between the community and the fire department, volunteering countless hours to organizing and hosting community events and fundraisers.
As fire chief, Dill looks forward to restoring unity to the department and the town and to leading the department in a positive direction.
“I am thrilled to be appointed the Fire Chief of the West Gardiner Fire Department. I have many exciting plans for the Department, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the members of my department to make these plans a reality,” she said in a press release.
Dill said she hopes that her example will inspire other women who are trying to advance in this traditionally male field.
The West Gardiner Board of Selectmen said it looks forward to working with Dill in this new role.
“We truly value Vicki Dill’s contributions to the Fire Department and the community all these years. She has earned the opportunity to be Fire Chief through her hard work, training and experience. We are confident she will succeed, and we will give her our full support.”
