BRUNSWICK, Maine —  In 2013 the Miss Maine Scholarship Program was proud to partner with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, an internationally recognized, self-development program available to all young people worldwide equipping them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities, and the world.

This award bestowed by Great Britain’s Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, began in 1956 and demonstrates activities in four areas: community service, special skills (talent), physical fitness, and adventurous journey (environment and teamwork). The award itself has three levels:  bronze, silver, and gold.  To obtain an award, participants aged 14 to 25 must demonstrate achievement at the appropriate level in various activities in the four sections.

“The young women competing in the Miss Maine and Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen programs are already involving themselves in the four categories of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award,” states Julia Furtado, Miss Maine 2011 and the first from Maine to receive this prestigious award.  “This is not only a great partnership for the Miss Maine Scholarship Program but is also an opportunity for these young women to be recognized on a world-wide platform.”

This year The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was bestowed on three Maine women, each receiving the bronze medal, at the annual Miss Maine Scholarship Competition on June 21, at the Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School.  They were Katie Elliott of Scarborough, Emily Baker of Topsham, and Katarina Pinet of Bangor.
