SACO—The Thornton Academy Math Team won third place at the Maine State Math Meet, held at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Tuesday, April 8th. The state competition included six individual rounds, two relay rounds, and two team rounds, with nearly 100 schools in attendance.

Individually, Xinyi (Lucy) Chen ’15 was the first place junior and was presented a silver bowl and a $300 cash prize for being the highest scoring student overall in the state for the entire 2013-14 season. Tristan Falardeau ’16 earned a fifth place award for sophomores, while Zihan (Winkle) Qi ’14 earned a twelfth place medal for seniors.

Ten students competed for Thornton Academy, which has been coached for the last six years by TA math teacher Marsha Snyder. Mrs. Snyder said, “As a student I competed and loved the experience of traveling to math competitions at other schools. Thornton hadn’t been involved in those events in many years and I wanted to bring back that option for students who love math. It is a terrific place for day and residential students to come together and speak our common language of mathematics!” Mrs. Snyder was one of fourteen nominees for the 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year Award.

The State Meet included problems from an array of topics like Algebra, Geometry, Number Sense, Algebra 2, and Trigonometry. Xinyi (Lucy) Chen ’15 and Zihan (Winkle) Qi ’14 have earned spots on the Maine Team, which selects the most successful students in the state to participate at a regional event in Pennsylvania in June called the American Regions Mathematics League. Tristan Falardeau ’16 and Jiaming (Frank) Zhang ’15 are alternates for this competition.

The TA team competed in five regular Pi Cone South meets during the year and have been very successful all season. They also have had the opportunity through the team to compete in other math events, including the New England Math League and the American Mathematics Competition.
