The Rev. Dr. Marvin Ellison to preach June 29 in Hancock

Posted June 26, 2014, at 9:23 a.m.

HANCOCK, Maine — The Union Congregational Church of Hancock, UCC, is pleased to welcome the Rev. Dr. Marvin Ellison who will preach on “Open & Affirming Sunday,” June 29, at 10 am. The church is located at 1368 Route 1 in Hancock. The public is invited.

From 1981 to 2013, Dr. Ellison was professor of Christian Ethics at Bangor Theological Seminary. He completed his doctoral studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and is an ordained Presbyterian minister. He founded the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination in Maine to support civil rights protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. He also co-chaired the Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry in Maine and served on the board of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England from 2007-2014.

Asked why a minister would be involved in politics, Ellison answered: “At the heart of any spirituality worth having is the call to love God, one another, and this precious earth. The public expression of love is to seek justice as right-relatedness in all of our connections. I engage in advocacy for the common good not because I love politics, but because I love God and God’s creation.”

A reception will follow the worship service and all are welcome to personally greet Rev. Ellison. For more information, please call the church at 422-3100 or visit the church’s website, www.hancockucc.org.
