Orono, Maine — The University of Maine School of Performing Arts is pleased to announce that due to overwhelming response, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band concert slated for 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, at the Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine in Orono is now sold-out. The concert, sponsored by the UMaine School of Performing Arts and the Bangor Daily News, attracted ticket requests from school groups, community members, current and former military personnel and many others from all over the central and northern Maine areas.
In the style of the band’s 17th Director John Philip Sousa, who initiated the concert tour tradition in 1891, Marine Band Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn has chosen a diverse mix of programs⎯from traditional band repertoire and marches to instrumental solos. Programs are rotated throughout the tour to accommodate different concert venues. As the programs rotate, so will the soloists.
UMaine Director of Sports Bands Christopher White is looking forward to this visit, “This is a great opportunity to see one of the world’s finest bands perform on our campus and to be inspired by their example”.
The Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams. Known as “The President’s Own” since the days of Thomas Jefferson, the Marine Band’s primary mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
