The Hancock Historical Society of the Town of Hancock

After serving for almost 30 years as the Curator of the Historical Society Museum, Lois Johnson is
retiring. All will miss Lois and her expert leadership, but we are also glad to welcome Charlene
Clemons of Hancock, as the new Curator.
When Lois returned to Hancock in 1982, the Historical Society was very young but Lois was eager to
become a member and after serving one year as president, found a new calling: that of Curator. Being
resourceful, imaginative and hard working, she turned the dusty and unused space of the second floor
of the Town Hall into the wonderful place it is today. She started with two file cabinets and a few boxes
of collectables. Soon, the museum was filled with historical documents, letters, maps and items that are
representative of those who lived in Hancock from its earliest years to present day. Our museum will
not lose Lois as she still plans to volunteer and lend a helping hand to Charlene.
On July 12, Friday, at 7 pm at the Community Center in Hancock on Rte 1, there will be a program to
honor Lois on her retirement. The publick is invited to attend. There will be refreshments. Admission is
free but donations to the Hancock Historical Society are always welcomed.
