In December, while laying beneath our bird feeder, Maddie (our 5 month old Golden Retriever) got an unexpected visit from our Maine State bird. Maddie calmly checked out just what this chickadee was all about and it appeared that neither feared one another. I continued to watch and take photos of this interaction as it began to rain. I called Maddie onto the porch and the little bird flew in, landed and hopped back onto her paw again. With a questioning look towards me, she continued to examine her new avian friend. After a few more photos, I called Maddie into the kitchen and the chickadee followed, landed on the back of a kitchen chair and then flew over and landed on her head. Our cat was watching from the doorway so we had Maddie step outside and the chickadee flew to the bird feeder, snatched a sunflower seed and flew away.
I thought this would be the last we’d see of this bird, but now seven months later, her little friend still arrives almost daily and will fly down and visit with Maddie for a few minutes. She has also befriended hummingbirds and they will follow her into the kitchen, land and allow Maddie to get a much closer look than I would ever expect to see.
I put these photos into a YouTube video slideshow here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQIBRhnFloE
