Professor Steven Selva of the University of Maine Fort Kent will lead a presentation on lichens at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, February 19 at 12:00 noon.
Dr. Selva will discuss the lichens’ fungal and algal composition, how to identify them, how the age and composition of forests can be determined based on what lichen and fungi are present, and will include a general overview of their biology.
Selva has taught botanical science at the University of Maine Fort Kent since 1976. Beginning in 1986, he began researching lichens and their use in assessing ecological continuity of forests in New England and Canada. He is the author of numerous articles on the subject of old-growth forests and lichens.
