SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine — The 22nd annual Great Harbor Shoot-Out basketball tournament will be held Friday-Sunday, March 14-16, at Harbor House Community Service Center. The tournament has more than 80 teams and four divisions that include girls and boys, junior high, and high school basketball teams from all over Maine. Event registration is open until Feb. 25.

“Every participant will get a Great Harbor Shoot-Out t-shirt. The winning teams from the high school girls, high school boys, junior high school girls and junior high school boys will each receive a trophy. Players on the winning teams also get backpacks filled with prizes and individual medals. This year, the runner-up team participants will be given medals as well,” remarked Event Coordinator Diana Novella in a press release.

The tournament brings thousands of people together each year. “It’s great to have more teams involved and to see the event expand. For the past several years, five or six new schools have contacted us after hearing about it and have then decided to compete,” Novella added. Games are held at gymnasiums on Mount Desert Island, in Ellsworth and Trenton.

Ingrid Wilbur Kachmar, Executive Director stated, “Proceeds from the tournament will support Harbor House programming. We have five key program areas and a roster of more than 40 health, fitness, educational, sports, community-based and youth-focused classes and activities. Harbor House serves every age group and every economic level from the local and summer communities.” The basketball tournament will be widely publicized throughout the state of Maine and individuals and businesses are encouraged to participate as sponsors to help raise funds for the community center.
