PITTSFIELD, Maine — Sebasticook Valley Health announced that orthopedic surgeon Maxime J-M Coles, MD, FRCS, FICS, was elected president of the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad, which is incorporated under its French acronym AMHE, for the 2013-14 year. The announcement was made during AMHE’s 40th annual conference held this in July in St. Martin.

SVH President and CEO Terri Vieira stated, “Dr. Coles has been a driving force on our orthopedic team since 2011 and brings many valuable talents in orthopedics that he’s perfected over the years at hospitals throughout the United States as well as in his humanitarian efforts to provide surgical care to the under-privileged in South America and Haiti. With his hand and trauma surgical expertise and his work with sports injuries with local athletes, Dr. Coles is a tremendous resource for providing leading edge surgical care at our hospital.”

At the conference, Dr. Coles delivered two presentations: one on fat embolisms and another on pelvis fractures. Dr. Coles is a fellow of the American Board of Neurological and Orthopedic Medicine and Surgery and has provided surgical care throughout the United States. Dr. Coles currently works as part of the SVH orthopedic team and serves as the chair of Orthopedic Section of the International College of Surgeons. Dr. Coles is also an international reviewer for the International Surgery Journal and is an advanced trauma life instructor, but his greatest passion is the mission work he regularly performs as a volunteer surgeon in countries like Peru, Costa Rica, and Haiti.

The AMHE was founded in 1972 by a group of Haitian physicians to foster professional alliances and promote the health and interest of the Haitian immigrant community at large. Since then, the organization has grown into seven chapters throughout the United States and Canada.
