SummerKeys Returns to Lubec

Posted June 01, 2012, at 1:06 p.m.

Summer has arrived, and with it come the music, classes, and lectures of SummerKeys.

The musical program includes instruction in classical and jazz piano, organ, strings (guitar, mandolin, Celtic harp, violin, viola, and cello), winds (flute and clarinet), trumpet, voice, and composition. There will be extra weeks of clarinet, flute and trumpet; cello has been extended to the entire summer. A new offering will be Piano One Hand, incorporating a vast variety of literature and music for students challenged in this way, and providing tools and inspiration for real progress.

SummerKeys continues its collaboration with The Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra as it again travels to Lubec for two weekend concerts. Each concert will follow a full orchestra week (weeks starting 7/23 and 8/6), in which students of all levels can experience playing in a symphonic setting while receiving patient professional input from conductor Trond Saeverud. SummerKeys piano students will be featured both weekends as part of the Piano Concerto Privilege program.

Three other interesting, non-musical workshops offered through SummerKeys are Mixed Media Arts (week 8/13), the now 4-week Photography (weeks 7/9, 7/23, 8/6 and 8/20), and a new Creative Writing Workshop (weeks 7/16, 7/30, 8/13, 8/27).

Happily enjoyed by music lovers in Lubec and surrounding areas, the SummerKeys’ Mary Potterton Memorial Concerts are an opportunity to listen to world-class music locally and completely free of charge, although piano tuning donations are always welcome. The concerts run June 20th through August 29th, with musicians performing every Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the Lubec Congregational Christian Church. There will also be three Thursday evenings, July 5th and 12th, and August 23rd.

The faculty welcomes new local pianist John Newell into its ensemble. Pianist/organist Richard McIntyre returns to teach his second year, and opens the first night on organ.

Familiar faces on the faculty/performer list include perennial favorites: founder Bruce Potterton, piano, 6/27; Mary Jo Carlsen, violin; Anna Maria Baeza, clarinet; Joachim Woitun, cello; and Gregory Biss, piano, together on 7/5; The Halcyon Duo, Eve Friedman, flute and Roberto Pace, piano, 7/11; Mandolin Consort, 7/12; Kent Hewitt, jazz piano, 7/18; Charles Jones, piano, 7/25; Faculty Concerts, 8/1 and 8/8; Mira Gill, piano, 8/15; Margret Hjaltested, viola, 8/22; new concert featuring Andrea Maurer, flute, Sue Richards, Celtic harp, 8/23; and Peter Lewy, cello, 8/29. Local area businesses will provide tasty refreshments during intermissions.
