SummerKeys Concerts to Begin Soon!

Posted June 06, 2013, at 3:11 p.m.

The SummerKeys’ Mary Potterton Memorial Concert season will commence Wednesday, June 19th, 7:30 pm, with a performance by faculty member and organist Richard McIntyre.

Mr. McIntyre has worked almost continuously as a church musician since the age of 16, and has conducted both choral and instrumental ensembles, as well as teaching courses in music history, theory and guitar. Pieces to be played are an improvisation on “Divinum Mysterium,” Halsey Stevens; the soft and thoughtful “Preludio in La Minore,” Ottorino Respighi; “Mein Jesu der du mich,” Johannes Brahms; and J.S. Bach’s intricately triumphant “Prelude and Fugue in G;” as well as an original, “Flight,” among others. Intermission refreshments provided by Peacock House B&B.

On Thursday, June 20th, pianist John Newell, in a colorful program titled “American Landscapes,” will perform the jazz-inspired “Three Preludes,” George Gershwin; 1976 “Mad Rush,” Philip Glass; “A Dance In the Desert,” Roberto Pace (Gene Nichols on percussion); “Thoreau,” Charles Ives; new piece “Seascape,” Scott Brickman; and “Variations on Amazing Grace,” Newell, among others. Mr. Newell has studied with Leonid Hambro, Mel Powell, and Morton Feldman. He earned his PhD in music from SUNY, Buffalo. Intermission refreshments provided by Uncle Kippy’s Restaurant.

Both concerts will be held upstairs in Lubec’s Congregational Christian Church at 7:30 p.m. Concerts are free, but piano-tuning donations are always welcome. For information about SummerKeys, visit summerkeys.com, call 207-733-2316, or e-mail sksmail@summerkeys.com.
