Summer Comedy The Canterbury Tales

Due to area power outages, Downriver Theatre Company’s performance of The Canterbury Tales is cancelled for tonight: Saturday, July 5. Shows will resume on Tuesday, July 8 through July 12.

A riotous night of storytelling, groping around in the dark, and slapstick abound in Downriver theatre’s summer rib-tickling farce of the Canterbury Tales. This witty, modernized adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer’s classic is sure to leave you entertained. Director Melanie Colbeth showcases the hilarity of the original tales with a combination of minimalism and beatnik. The barefoot actors don amusing costumes as they become a group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury and stop off at the Tabard Inn. They partake in a storytelling contest where five zany stories are told, each a little wackier than the last. A gullible carpenter is duped. A proud rooster falls victim to flattery. Three revelers foolishly set out to kill Death. A knight discovers what all women want most and a thieving miller winds up getting his just desserts. Sure to be a laugh-a-minute.
