SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Employees of the City of South Portland and members of South Portland Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 1476 banded together last week to raise $840 for  South Portland Food Cupboard in order to buy turkeys for needy families during the holidays.

The Food Cupboard informed city officials last week that they did not receive donated turkeys this year. City employees and the firefighters union decided to raise the money needed to buy approximately 75 turkeys for families and individuals in need.

“The Food Cupboard is an important part of the South Portland Community.” said James Gailey, South Portland City Manager.  “Once we found out the need existed to buy turkeys for the holidays, city employees and IAFF Local 1476 generously opened their wallets to support our most needy citizens.”

The South Portland Food Cupboard is a 501(3)(c) and is 100 percent volunteer run. The Food Cupboard helps well over 300 families a month.  For more information on the South Portland Food Cupboard please contact Sybil Riemensnider at  874-0379 or foodcupboard@maine.rr.com.
