Solar Observing Presentions at L.C. Bates Museum

On Friday, August 8, 2014 at 7:15 PM, Stephen Ramsden, a well know astronomer and founder of the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project will be presenting a public program on Solar Viewing in the Prescott Auditorium on the Good Will –Hinckley campus. Stephen Ramsden will also support solar viewing in the L.C.Bates Museum Observatory on Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9 from 1 PM to 4 PM if the skies are clear. Mr Ramsden will be supporting the museum staff in adding new public viewing and imaging opportunities at the observatory. The new equipment will mean visitors, including school groups will be able to see the sun on a screen and take photographs of the sun. Through his talk, Mr Ramsden’s will share information about the awesome beauty and amazing features of our nearest star, the Sun. Saturday, August 9 at 8 PM is also the L.C.Bates Museum’s annual Moths and Meteorites Night. Come discover Maine’s moths and watch for incoming meteorites.

Stephen Ramsden is from Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy, the largest presenter of community solar astronomy outreach programs in the world. Their solar astronomy programs have reached thousands of people yearly in the United States and additional countries.

The filtered Lunt telescope in the L.C.Bates Museum observatory on clear days is usually open Wednesday to Friday afternoon from 1 to 3 PM for public viewing. Camps and school classes may call the museum to plan a trip to the museum for Solar programs, activities and viewing at the museum.

Bates Museum is located on Rt 201 in Hinckley, Maine on the campus of Good Will-Hinckley. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10 AM to 4:30 PM and Sunday 1 PM to 4:30 PM hours and other times by appointment.
