BIDDEFORD, Maine — Southern Maine Medical Center staff and SMMC PrimeCare physicians joined the Fernandez family on Dec. 23 to dedicate SMMC’s 9 Healthcare Drive medical office building in honor of SMMC’s former Chief Medical Director Robert V. Fernandez, M.D.
Dr. Fernandez was a beloved, respected, long-time physician leader in the community. When he died suddenly two months ago, SMMC and SMMC PrimeCare Physician colleagues wanted to ensure that Fernandez was honored appropriately for his exceptional contributions to SMMC and this community.
“Nobody was a better life saver, physician and clinical leader than Bob,” stated SMMC president & CEO Ed McGeachey at the dedication ceremony. “I am very pleased that the SMHC Board of Trustees decided to name this facility the Robert V. Fernandez Medical Office Building. We know Bob was a quiet hero and he probably would have been embarrassed by this attention, but we are grateful that his wife and family have agreed to allow us to honor him in such a meaningful manner. It means so much to those of us who worked with Bob for so many years and know well the huge difference he made to so many patients and to our organization.”
Dr. Fernandez dedicated 35 years of his life to the SMMC Family, including serving as president of the SMMC Medical Staff prior to being named chief of the SMMC Medical Staff. He was a practicing physician and 9 Healthcare Drive is where Dr. Fernandez saw his pulmonology and internal medicine patients. The 9 Healthcare Drive medical office building is also where he spent thousands of hours studying and preparing for medical staff meetings.
A plaque with Dr. Fernandez’s photo and dedication will soon be placed in the lobby of the Fernandez Medical Office Building at 9 Healthcare Drive and his name was placed on the outside wall. Family, friends and colleagues attended Monday’s ceremony.
